A twig snapped under his boot and the man flinched. He hoped that the girl hadn’t heard the noise. Her peaceful face showed no signs of acknowledgement to his presence. He gripped the colt strapped to his thigh. The girl’s horse bobbed his head up and down, catching the big man’s scent in the soft breeze. He prayed hard that the horse wouldn’t alert his rider to his being there. He stayed behind the large tree, watching and waiting, until the dark sky began to show shades of orange and pink as the sun rose into the sky little by little, a big orange ball of light. The girl’s face shone radiantly from the light of the sun. Her unruly hair lay about her like a pillow of soft silk. Her long skirt was arranged over her legs as to only show the very tip of her boot. Her hands were folded under her head, making her look like a sleeping angel. Her eyelids began to flutter and then opened, revealing dark brown, glittery eyes. She blinked and began to sit up. The man slipped quietly into the retreating shadows.
