The following is quoted from my friend, Justin Dickerson, straight from his flyer Operation:Homeless
Six weeks on the streets of Dayton... To become a message
to the rejected, the hurting, the outcast.
...To preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of the sight to the blind,
to set at liberty them that are oppressed.

What is Operation: Homeless?
For the longest time, I (Justin Dickerson) have been wanting to preach the gospel and minister to the homeless sub-culture. Operation Homeless is a title for a journey into another world where suffering people live and survive in poverty. The beginning date has been set for December 19th. Though the actual time taken on this journey is uncrtain, a six week period was chosen to discover the homeless world. During this time I will leave my belongings and home behind to live on the streets of downtown Dayton Ohio. While in a state of homelessness, my mission will be to better understand the community of suffering people who would most often reject the gospel from those who live comfortable lives. Of course this approach to ministry is not necessary to reach these people. God can use anyone of any lifestyle to do his work. However God has called me to make the sacrifice of my comforts and wants in order to become a better witness for the sake of Jesus. Many of those in a state of awry conditions seek only their temporary remedy to their immediate needs, or, addictions. It has become difficult to reach someones eternal soul for Christ when all they see you as is another comfortable Christian who doesn't really care about them on a deep level, in order to reach this deep level of care, I hope to become as if I was one of them. What I have to Offer is not a temporary fix to their state of desperation, but a cry of hope for eternal salvation through Jesus Christ.
During these six week, or however God should lead me,I will carry Basic Necessities; involve myself in activities that an ordinary homeless person would; educate myself in the community of homeless and poverty stricken; and preach the Gospel in word and deed to whomever God should send my way. During these few weeks I will stay in contact with godly men and women who can exhort and keep me accountable. Working with existing programs and ministries that are active in serving the homeless will also be an objective.
The Risks And Dangers Of Savage Streets And The Criminal Underworld
The Concern about the safety of being homeless is very real and important. The streets of Dayton are known for Being hostile to many who are not used to living a poor city lifestyle. Dayton hosts an eminent racial tension involving violence and even homicide on a frequent basis. Most homeless people are under the influence of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. But weather those in this sub-culture are seeking hostility or just a glimpse of hope, God's power and sustenance is still greater. I put my trust in Christ first and foremost. Yes the risks are evident, and the absurdity of such an undertaking would seam altogether overpowering. But as I follow Jesus, who Himself was homeless, I can only hope that I can better understand the ministry of Jesus and those He cane to die for. If I would suffer in any way, God will take notice, and permit safety as He desires. Again to be a minister of the Gospel is not a calling that comes easy. I can expect hardships, but I can also expect the Hand of God.
The greatest threat during the operation may not be violence, but suffering through the elements. Starting the mission in the dead of winder is nothing short of difficult. But many factors were considered when choosing the time and duration for the project. During the journey I will visit local churches, soup kitchens and homeless shelters when needed.
How You Can Help
Prayer is, of course, your greatest tool and gift of service. Remember, this is all about Jesus. God is the One who does the work, I just get to be a part of what he is doing. Please pray that I will stay in God's will and be sensitive to his desires. Please pray for wisdom and guidance, the most powerful way you can be a part of this ministry. and finally, prayer for opportunities to spread the Gospel is of much appreciation.
